January 12-14, 2010
New England Conference Center
Co-sponsored with NOAA's National Marine Protected
Areas Center
A 2012 UPDATE
In early 2010, the National Ocean Service’s
Ocean
Uses Team partnered with the
University of New Hampshire’s Coastal Response Resource Center
to map a wide range of ocean uses in New Hampshire and Southern
Maine. At the time, ocean use patterns were gathered through a participatory
workshop with local experts in preparation for the March 2010 Spill
of National Significance drill. A month later, the actual Deepwater
Horizon Spill occurred. Now, two years later, the utility of ocean
use data for response, assessment and restoration is as relevant
and clear as ever. The re-release of the products and insight derived
from this project is intended to spark further integration of the
patterns and significance of ocean uses into the whole spectrum
of emergency response and follow up efforts. To date, the NOAA’s
Ocean Uses Team has completed mapping in California,
New
Hampshire and Southern Maine,
Northwest
Hawaii, and West Maui.

Environmental emergecies in coastal waters,
whether caused by extreme weather or accidents such as oil spills,
require responders to make quick decisions about where and how
to deploy available resources to protect sensitive areas and the
human uses they support. The Ocean Uses Atlas Project is an innovative
partnership between the Coastal Response Research Center (CRRC)
and NOAA's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM).
The project fills a critical information gap for response efforts
in the coastal and offshore waters of New Hampshrie and southern
Maine by mapping the full range of significant human uses of the
ocean in their state and federal waters. Spatial data on ocean
use patterns will be gathered from regional ocean experts throgh
a participatory Geographic Information System (GIS) process in
a workshop environment. The resulting data, maps, and analytical
products will be used in emergency response planning and made
available to state and federal ocean management agencies and all
other interested parties.
