Zach OR&RNOAA OR&R Senior Scientist Alan Mearns has submitted an annual review of the 2007 peer-reviewed literature on the Effects of Pollution on Marine Life which will be published in the October 2008 issue of Water Environment Research (WER).  Co-authors include Michael Buchman (OR&R Assessment and Restoration Division) and a representative each from NOAA Fisheries, U.S. EPA, Exponent, Inc. and Professor Emeritus Donald J. Resch, of California State University at Long Beach.  Nearly 300 papers (of several thousand) were selected for review and cover a wide range of subjects including contaminant residues in organisms, biomarkers, toxicity testing, and field surveys.  The review focuses on special or emerging effects issues including oil spills, marine debris, vessel coatings, non-indigenous biota (including ballast water treatment), wastewater discharges, and dredging and dumping. The senior author has participated in these annual reviews for three decades.  Brian Voss, of the NOAA Library contributed to this project as well.  For more information, contact Alan Mearns or Michael Buchman.
